What Is Technical SEO?

By Shriyan Technologies

Most business owners understand that SEO means "getting found on Google." Fewer understand that behind every high-ranking website is a technical foundation that makes it possible for search engines to read, understand, and trust the site in the first place.

Technical SEO refers to the structural and performance characteristics of your website rather than its content. It is the difference between a website that search engines can easily index and one that has invisible barriers preventing it from ranking — regardless of how good the content is.

Why Technical SEO Matters

Search engines like Google use automated programs called crawlers to discover and index web pages. If your website has technical issues — slow loading, broken links, missing structure, or crawl errors — the crawler cannot properly understand or index your content, and your pages will not rank as well as they should.

Technical SEO ensures your website is accessible, fast, secure, and structurally clear enough for both search engines and users.

Core Areas of Technical SEO

1. Crawlability

Search engines must be able to discover and visit your pages. Issues like broken internal links, incorrect robots.txt settings, or pages blocked from indexing prevent crawlers from doing their job.

2. Indexability

A page being crawlable does not mean it is indexed. Technical SEO ensures important pages have the correct signals to be indexed and unimportant or duplicate pages are excluded.

3. Site Speed and Core Web Vitals

Google measures website performance using Core Web Vitals — a set of metrics around loading speed, visual stability, and interactivity. Websites that perform well on these metrics receive a ranking advantage. Slow websites lose both rankings and visitors.

4. Mobile Usability

Google indexes websites primarily from the mobile version of the site. A site that is not properly optimized for mobile — layouts that break, text that is too small, buttons too close together — is at a structural disadvantage.

5. HTTPS (SSL Security)

Sites that use HTTPS are trusted by both browsers and search engines. An unsecured (HTTP) website shows a "Not Secure" warning to visitors and ranks lower than equivalent secure sites.

6. Structured Data (Schema Markup)

Structured data is code added to your pages that tells search engines what the content means — not just what it says. Adding structured data for your business, services, FAQs, and articles can unlock rich results in Google, which improve click-through rates.

7. Canonical Tags

If the same or similar content exists on multiple URLs, search engines may divide ranking signals between them. Canonical tags tell search engines which version of a page to treat as the primary one.

8. Sitemap and Robots.txt

A sitemap tells search engines which pages exist on your site and how often they change. The robots.txt file controls which pages search engine crawlers should and should not access. Both need to be correctly configured.

How Technical SEO Differs from On-Page SEO

On-page SEO focuses on the content of your pages — keyword usage, headings, images, and internal links. Technical SEO focuses on the infrastructure beneath the content. Both are necessary for a website that ranks well consistently.
